Auction Watch: Week 12, 2026

Week of March 16, 2026

The E39 M5 finds a buyer at $35K, an Alfa 156 GTA surfaces, and a second S2000 this month crosses $40K.

The Week in Auctions

The E39 M5 at $35K is a bellwether. These were $15K cars five years ago, and now clean examples routinely cross $30K. The S62 V8 is one of BMW's finest engines, and the E39 chassis remains the gold standard for sport sedan balance. If you want one, the time was two years ago -- the second best time is now.

The 156 GTA at $22K is a fascinating result. This is an obscure car in North America, but the Busso V6 is one of the great automotive sounds and the 156 GTA's rarity gives it genuine collector appeal. We've been tracking the 156 GTA as a future-classic wildcard, and this result validates the thesis.

Market Signal

Two S2000s crossing $38K and $41K in the same month is not a coincidence. The AP1 and AP2 markets are converging toward a $40K baseline for clean, unmolested examples. The S2000 has graduated from "enthusiast car" to "collector car" and the pricing reflects it.
